My father was a country singer, songwriter and guitar player. You can hear his music and read more about him at: http://www.rybird.com/volliebrown.html . He had a 1946 Gibson acoustic he bought new, that I have since acquired. He was a patient man, and showed me all the basic open chords and how to play a few simple country songs

I listened to Rybird’s new album, Music for Interrogation, and it’s a full-on, energetic musical adrenaline rush. Every track grabs you and pulls you in and doesn’t let you go, and then swirls around in your mind for a long time after it’s over.

Music didn’t just give me energy, it controlled me. Depending on the style of music being played, I may have become subdued and relaxed as opposed to dancing. I would really be attracted towards mood music that affected my mood, and dreamy music, that encouraged daydreaming.

Grind: to wear down, polish, or sharpen by friction. Polish: to bring to a highly developed, finished, or refined state : perfect. Grind and Polish: The title track to my first album. Five years ago today, I posted the video blog you’ll see here. I re-post it today because I want to get back to doing this kind of thing. The day before this was made, I was going through some old papers and I happened across some lyrics to a song I had written some 12 [...]

It’s hard to choose a synthesizer for inclusion in my projects, however I do have certain go to synths that I almost always use and certain effects I almost always use. I will list these and explain why I like them and include a complete list at the end.

The Album Leaf is a Californian band, formed in 1998. These guys combine guitars, keyboards and real drums with subtle electronic elements. The music is very mellow. If you like Mum and/or Sigur Ros, you’ll probably enjoy The Album Leaf. It is ‘lo-fi’ or ‘leftfield’ music (not to be confused with Leftfield, the electronic duo [...]

Richard D. James (AKA Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window and Caustic Window) started making music in his bedroom, in his mid-teens; impressing his Mom and his mates with forward-thinking ambient soundscapes. After releasing two collections of his works, he tried his hand at techno. He found an audience with underground dance classics such as Digeridoo [...]

Autechre’s debut album (Incunabula) was brilliant! Sean Booth and Rob Brown were still going strong, in the mid-nineties – after two more albums and four EPs. However, their ‘music’ became increasingly abstract and abrasive towards the end of the decade. Their descent didn’t stop there. Each subsequent album has been worse than the previous one. [...]

Bernard Sumner’s last project, Bad Lieutenant, released Never Cry Another Tear in 2009. Fans of New Order’s last album (Waiting For The Sirens’ Call) may like it. It is very melodic but mainly acoustic. This seems a shame, because Bernard Sumner really excels when he is working with synthesizers – as evidenced on most of [...]

What can I say about Bjork that hasn’t already been said? Love her or hate her, you have to admit that she is truly one of a kind. She has been involved in the music industry since the age of twelve. Before her ‘proper’ debut solo album, she was one of The Sugarcubes (the band [...]

Tim Simenon had his finger on the pulse in 1988. He and Pascal Gabriel had loads of fun, putting together a sample-heavy dance album – inspired by hip-hop and acid house. The first Bomb The Bass single (Beat Dis) became an instant dance classic, upon its release. Subsequent singles from Into The Dragon were also [...]

Colder is a one-man ‘band’ (the man being Marc Nguyen Tan; a DJ and remixer, from France). There are only two albums (Again and Heat). It’s a pity because Colder is one of my best ‘finds’. It is a unique sound. As the name suggests, the music is austere. It is a stripped-down blend of [...]
