The Friday Fling Shares Gardening Tips Didactically!
2012-04-12 at 09:00 pmFriday Fling #176 April 13th 2012
Gardening! It’s that time of year when the gardening tools come out of the shed, and even those of us who are not tools do too. Ok but seriously folks, that’s our theme this week, sharing gardening tips!
The general term for any poem which imparts insturctional information is Didactic. It can rhyme or not, have even or patterened syllable count or not, pretty wide open! For instance:
Follow a few simple rules
to grow a garden of tomatoes
plant below stem nodules.
Step back and shout: thar she grows!
Carrots need loose soil to thrive
straight and long as they should be.
Seedlings take time to arrive.
But grow they will, as you will see!
This week the Friday Fling shares gardening tips in Didactic poetry!
Be sure to save time to read and comment prolifically on your fellow Pals’ poetic recommendations. Then do your own personal gardening this weekend for whatever you hope to harvest later!
Fickle Finger of Fate Award for April 6th
Congratulations Mary Margaret!

Sonnet’s Garden Advice
We tend our gardens watch them grow
And in the spring some seeds we sow
Watering gives our plants a chance
We weed so that weeds won’t advance
Plant flowers with similar needs
Sprinkle bone meal our bulbs it feeds
Pinch back the mums for bigger blooms
While tending all those garden rooms
Some perennials you divide
Then more flowers it will provide
Stake peonies from wind and rain
Then the white blossoms will not stain
Plant marigolds to deter ants
It makes a great companion plant
Deadhead petunias every day
Then longer will your flowers stay
Coffee grounds for azaleas base
For nutrients it does replace

The whole idea for this came from a cute cartoon of two dogs on their hind legs holding an umbrella on a lawn, which Bettie posted on the TAT. I commented using the first line and then came back to it with a melody in my head, and continued it from there. Thanks (((Michelle))) I figured as a dog lover you’d enjoy this

MY POTATOE
I once had a green thumb
Me mom would buy
Little packs of seeds
Give one each
To me sister and I
We would go out and plant them
In our own little spot
Mine waz but always
In a pot
I likes to keep
me plants close by
So could watch them grow
Sister would plant her
Out of door
And never see it grow
I would water me plant
Every over day
As the dirt would dry
Feed it plant food
So would grow fast
And tall
An potato eye
Waz me best one of all
Would just put in water
Let set on own
Till sprout out little eyes
Put in bigger jar
Till leaves grew
Then dad
Would take out to garden
I would watch
Every day
Till leaves popped out the ground
Harvest time came
Pull up plant
There waz me to ta
I had grown

You can already plant some things -- good time to put in onions and garlic because they are so cold hardy, although last Fall was better -- also ok for potatoes, by the time they sprout frost danger should be past in most of the northlands of the USA. And of course pansies are on sale now, among other cold-hardy spring flowers.

Thankls Michelle -- that is all that is left of the backyard lawn after I turned most of it into a garden in 1999. The foreground is mostly dirt now due to the heavy shade from that whatever it is. It has made a really cool shade cover for years now, but last fall’s snowstorm took a toll on it.

The day I plant my herbs to grow is busy day everyone knows.
One by one I carefully choose the seed for the right colorful pots.
That way a better chance that none will rot
I label my little seedlings so I know how much water the get.
when they get so big I but them in bigger pots.
When it time to harvest them I dry them for my magical uses a lot.
I love my gardened the way it smells.
I can feel the energies in my soul.
I tell them grow baby grow.
For reap what I sow.

These are my black hollyhocks that bloom every summer in front of my livingroom window.
My perennial garden along my yard by the road of Blackeyed Susans that attract finches and butterflies. The red flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
I also have a vegetable garden every year and this is last year’s harvest! We had so much Zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers. The best ever garden in a long time.
And sometimes we get veggies growing in very unusual shapes. This Eggplant and a big nose growing out of it. LOL… I called this my Jimmy Durante eggplant and it made a very delicious eggplant Parmesan

All so wonderful (((Michelle!!! The Hollyhocks are spectacular and remind me so much of the garden my grandmother used to tend in New York State. The daisy pic is so prefessional looking, like it was in a seed catalog! And the veggies are amazing, our garden last year was a bust, maybe partly because of all the rain and more shade than we should have back there now.
Good night, Mrs. Eggplant, whereever you are!

FRIENDSHIP’S SPRINGTIME GARDEN
Lingering for a moment
at my window of dawn,
I inhale the sweet fragrances
from my garden of morn,
nighttime dreams left behind
to visit another time.
Seeds of friendship
sown with care and love
are blooming in the garden,
nurtured from above,
exquisite jewels sparkling
in the April morning sun.
Sprinkled liberally with tears
of sadness and joy,
friendship flowers bloom
just outside my window here,
blossoms of precious silver and gold
filling this vase within my heart
as they’ve graced my special garden
on this beautiful springtime day.

Hi Michelle and Bob! Wonderful blog with great writes by all…been quite the week this week, so haven’t had much time around here. Here’s something on the spur of the moment…lol…
~
A Garden to Sow
Dig the garden to loosen the soil
Mark off the rows for seeds to sow
Plant them lovingly in the ground
And pray to God that it doesn’t snow.
Water them when rain doesn’t fall
Keep them nourished and free from weeds
A bountiful crop will be rewarded to you
You can also save next year’s seeds.

Ah another country (Canada) heard from on gardening, watching out for snow. We should talk, we had a foot two days before Halloween and have had as much in April before! Good point about saving seeds for next year too AL! Very fine off the cuff! Hope you have more time to spend here next week!

We had 80 degree weather for about a week here in Ohio back in March that had everything blossoming too early. Then a week later we had snow and frost that damaged my hydrangea bush that was shooting lots of leaves. I was so upset
. Great poem, Angel Love and very good garden advice.
