Bad Day in the Pack

I was born to a life of living in a pack. When I matured enough to leave my birth pack, I assembled a pack of my own. A human can find a great deal of security, humor and joy when living in a multi-species pack, but (isn’t there always a “but”) the responsibility of being the pack alpha has its eventual emotional downside.

The canine members of my pack are aged. We were expecting a loss in the foreseeable future. We thought more than likely it would be Kiki (16) just because of her age, but she is in amazing health.

Maybe Sadie (12) who is overweight and just had surgery for a growth that had developed on the underside of her tail (it turned out to be benign).

Possibly Pokey (10) who is quite healthy, but having lost an eye, you just never know.

Our youngest, DeeJay (8), was never considered when discussing the inevitable. At least not yet.

He started getting sick back in August. The drugs seemed to be working until they started triggering more than they helped. He had his last antibiotic on Sunday. He stopped eating on Tuesday. He went into shock this morning. We had to let him go. The vet and I cried together this afternoon. Tonight my pack mourns.
