Welcome to the November 2013 Edition
of PICK-APART POETRY
as we celebrate Thanksgiving
and the blessings that we enjoy
true Pick-Apart fashion.

Please select 25 words from
the following two Thanksgiving poems
and create a piece using those
25 words.

Remember though that the words
may be repeated and the forms
and tenses changed to suit your fancy.

And even though our theme this month
a Thanksgiving one, your poem
doesn’t have to be.

OVER THE RIVER, AND THROUGH THE WOOD

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather’s house we go;
the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river, and through the wood,
to Grandfather’s house away!
We would not stop for doll or top,
for ’tis Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river, and through the wood—
oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
as over the ground we go.

Over the river, and through the wood—
and straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
it is so hard to wait!

Over the river, and through the wood—
When Grandmother sees us come,
She will say, “O, dear, the children are here,
bring a pie for everyone.”

Over the river, and through the wood—
now Grandmother’s cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

THANKSGIVING SONG

Thanksgiving comes but once a year,
But when it comes it brings good cheer.
For in my storehouse on this day
Are piles of good things hid away.
Each day I’ve worked from early morn
To gather acorns, nuts, and corn,
Till now I’ve plenty and to spare
Without a worry or a care.
So light of heart the whole day long,
I’ll sing a glad Thanksgiving song.

~ THORNTON W. BURGESS ~

Our only goal here
is creativity
and fun.

We look forward to what we create
and bring back to share.

And wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks so much, Cherie, for the “Over the River” suggestion. In researching it a bit before posting it, I discovered that over the years there have been verses added and that the original has been adapted for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. These aren’t quite the words I remember either. And there’s actually a longer version. I love how poetry evolves over the years like that. The beauty of it for sure.

  9. Thanksgiving good cheer
    to you far and near,
    carried upon the wind
    from my heart to yours,
    gathered with lots of care
    and with plenty to spare,
    to go around and around
    the dinner table with love
    to each and to all
    gathered ’round
    to share.

  10. TERMITE THANKSGIVING

Bites through the wood so hard,
    extremely slow.
    Would not stop.
    Straight through the barnyard gate
    and the wood sleigh.
    Grandfather’s house away!
    Grandmother will say:
    “Oh dear! Thanksgiving does blow!”
